Education

A windstorm has arrived. My lights are flickering. So I’m going to get this out as fast as possible.

Says prayer: hang on electricity…hang on.

I originally wanted to start this post with a statement like….receiving a quality education in America should not be so difficult, especially for the parents who have to do rocket science like thinking – insert a complex compound algebra problem and multiple broken down conclusion with some type of chemistry theorem divided by pi  and subtract the birth year(s) of child(ren) then add that by expected high school graduation year – in order for the conclusion to be little Jack and Jill will go through their respective school system with ease, with moderate to high marks and will be able to snag a spot in a decent college that leads to a working class (or better) life.

Ok I said a lot up there. But the gist, education for our children should NOT be rocket science. Yet it’s hampered with obstacles to no fault of their own. Think budget cuts, school closures, inexperienced leaders and lack of basic and essential resources to help aid the children along to name a few. Throw in life stresses that may affect children and receiving an education in America SEEMS like it is nearing the same level of  receiving an education in a war torn territory. We’re not that bad off, but our children often find themselves in the middle of  systematic procedures and processes that is often bias and disguised as being in their favor.

Thank God for fellow parents, teachers, administrators and community activists that fight hard for our children. To honor such groups, Speakeasy DC and Teaching for Change is having its premier show After-School Special: A Night of True Stories By and About Educators. The show is slated to take place at the Atlas Performing Arts Center May 7 and 9.

Speakeasy DC and Teaching for Change are putting forth an audition call. Per Teaching for Change’s website:
