Hey All.

This post is strictly for my D.C. readers, especially those that live in my awesome Ward 7 community. There’s a lot going on this weekend! I know my Saturday is going to be a bit hectic with some holiday/birthday party hoping I plan to do. However, before I do anything I have to share with you what’s going on in the community. There are three important things going down this weekend in the ward with the first dealing with education.

On Saturday, Dec. 14th, The Ward 7 Education Council is hosting its school fair at Kelly Miller Middle School located at 301 49th Street NE. From 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. the fair will feature Ward 7’s neighborhood schools and other options from across the city. A representative from My School DC will be there to discuss the process of lottery enrollment.

When you are done planning and investing in your child’s future, make your way to the Chateau from 3 P.M. until 7 P.M.  at 3439 Benning Rd. NE for the annual Ward 7 Democrats holiday party and coat drive.  There’s no cover or admission but you are to bring a new and unwrapped coats, hats or gloves meant for children ages 5 to 12. This year’s coat drive is in support of our babies attending Smothers and J.C. Nalle Elementary schools. It’s always a festive time with my fellow Ward 7 Dems especially with a buffet dinner and lots of cutting up on the dance floor. To boot, there are door prizes and a 50/50 raffle. I’ll be there. It’ll be my first stop of the evening!

Also, even though this party benefits the kids, this is an adult party at an adult establishment. Call up your babysitter now.

On Sunday, Dec. 15th, from 5 P.M till 8 P.M. the the Ward 7 and Friends Holiday Party is taking place at Smiths Commons located at 1245 H Street NW. The cost is $15 plus any donation you are willing to give. Proceeds benefit families under the East River Family Strengthening Collaborative. The collaborative works with families in helping them become self sufficient and stabilized in the middle of harsh times and perhaps a harsher environment. The collaborative’s mission and works include; providing a tax clinic/financial literacy program and a youth services division that provides a youth development and leadership program. Last year’s party raised $2,100  for six families under the collaborative.

In conjunction with raising funds for the East River Family Strengthening Collaborative, a portion of the proceeds will also go towards helping Officer Sean Hickman, a Metropolitan Police Officer from the Sixth District station.

” He protected our streets and has also sowed into the future of children in Ward 7, sacrificing countless hours as a Youth Court advocate, holiday characters, taking the youth camping, attending youth conferences, having one on one dialogues about choices and most of all just saying hi to everyone he passes with that contagious smile. He did all this while he had a family at home.  In March he was intentionally struck by a car while sitting on his motor scooter on duty.  Officer Hickman was thrown from the scooter resulting in nearly losing his foot.  His entire leg had to be reconstructed with numerous surgeries to transfer veins from one leg to the other and reattach his foot. Officer Hickman went through another surgery the week of December 1st  and his recuperation will be  long with several surgeries scheduled and countless hours of rehabilitation before returning to full duty.  Due to his injuries, Officer Hickman has been unable to receive differential and overtime pay resulting in household expenses escalating in addition to mounting medical bills.  East River Family Strengthening Collaborative has set up funds to help bring holiday cheer to “Officer Santa” and take care of medical bills and housing modifications. As a community we want to do our part. ” – Ward 7 and Friends Host Committee.

There it is, a small but very busy and festive round up of what’s going on in Ward 7 this weekend. I hope to see you out and about, despite the light and wet snow and rain coming our way. At least it won’t dampen my plans to strut in heels Saturday night…but I’ll carry flats in case black ice suddenly appears!

Happy Holidays! Remember, be safe, drink responsibly and really… Drive SOBER and if need be RIDE drunk.
