Not long ago I was able to sit down with a young lady and discuss what it is to live selfishly.  Trust me it’s not what you think.

Once she was placed on my radar, I knew I had to speak with Gernae Chase about a movement she inadvertently started; #Selfish20s. Chase is a D.C. area native that is using her medium of radio as a bigger platform. She’s encouraging her fellow millennial peers to use this time in their 20s to live fully in their passion; begin to discover and explore what you are meant to do in life. Don’t settle for the usual hum drum of a 9 to 5. Go for it full throttle. Let me stop before I drift into cliche’ land – LOL .

Though a brief glimpse, I was more than happy when EBONY.com gave me the green light to spotlight Chase’s story.  In a nutshell, from her teen years into collage she knew she wanted to be on the radio. Her witty and exuberant presence is proof that she belongs on the airwaves to brighten our spirits.  However, a person in the industry she respects and admires told her otherwise. Maybe she unconsciously fell into that hole of believing her “mentor’s” words, because she found herself working a 9 to 5, but it wasn’t working for her.  She hit (what she thought) was a slump with the worries of life compounding her, until a night out with friends helped her change her attitude. During that night out Chase unloaded her burdens and even began capturing the evening on camera and posting to her social media sites using the hashtag #Selfish20s. It went viral.

Though Chase has been able to make her transition into being an entrepreneur as a radio host of her own (rated #1 in the D.C. area) radio show – The Gernae Adele Show – that airs online on Saturday mornings, she still dealt with some “dark” thoughts and feelings only to finally realize she has begun to live in her purpose.  At the moment she’s moving right along to ensure that by 30 she is thriving as she should.
