My second article for EBONY.com (EBONY Magazine) has been posted. I’m proud to say that I am honored to have worked on this story as it focuses on an organization within my (larger) community of Ward 7 here in D.C.; but more specifically the Kenilworth-Parkside neighborhood within Ward 7. The organization, DC Promise Neighborhood Initiative, was brought to my attention around the holidays (Dec. going into Jan.) Once the New Year came in, I went to work learning all that I could about the organization, its mission and the driving force behind it all. My initial intent was to present a longer narrative about the organization and just when I thought I would be able to, the major publication that was considering it wanted to focus on something else altogether. Needless to stay I found a landing place to tell this story, but in a shorter context. Still, this is a major step as DCPNI is finding its confident stride and is moving forward with their work.

I want to say that their work is very important as it not only focuses on the children, but starting in the fall it will spread their focus and resources to the single mothers within the Kenilworth-Parkside community. There is a sensitive issue at hand as DCPNI is housed in one of the public elementary schools that will close in the fall. While the DC Public School System (DCPS) is a working partner with DCPNI, DCPS NEEDS to read this affirmation about DCPNI. DCPS needs to know why DCPNI NEEDs to stay in place well beyond the summer in order to effectively get the work done.

I hope the message will be warmly received and “heard” loud and clear.
