This month has met me with deadline after deadline, but one deadline I was overjoyed and anxious about. As the release of the Cool “Disco” Dan documentary is closing in, I was invited AGAIN to a pre-screening. This time it was the finished product. I love it even MORE! After talking with the directors, producers and a couple of participants, I did a write up for the Washington City Paper (WCP) that was posted online today. One of the elements that pulled me in was a general discussion about the mental health of Dan. It’s a focus I write about for the WCP post.
The amazing thing is the documentary is only ONE component to a larger piece that documentarians Roger Gastman and Joseph Pattisall have worked on. The documentary is a compliment to “Pump Me Up: D.C. Subculture of the 1980s” an exhibit that will be shown at the Corcoran Gallery of Art from February 23 to April 7. The two February 23 shows of the documentary have sold out, but a second date for one show on March 1 has been added. February 24 will be musical tribute to an era that birthed Cool “Disco” Dan.”
The Funk-Punk Throwback Jam is the party that pays homage to D.C. of the 1980s. The show will feature local bands such as Trouble Funk, Junkyard, Shady Groove and DJ Kool ans special guest Stinky Dink. The show will be hosted by Henry Rollins, who also narrates the documentary. The show will be at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are $25.
This is a ride that native Washingtonians are going to want to jump on.
