No. I don’t have it. I just wrote about it. Yesterday marked the start of National Influenza Vaccination Week. To “celebrate” I wrote an article for Black Health Matters. This one was really interesting to write as I know plenty of my friends will turn their nose, laugh or take a deep breath before spewing conspiracy theories when you talk about flu shots. Ok, I’m one. Though my parents routinely get flu shots every year, I don’t. I’m one of the ones that says “but it makes you sick,” and I just don’t have that kind of time to be bed ridden. After all, the vaccination contains the inactive (dead) virus itself. I will say that I did learn a thing or two about the untruths of receiving a flu shot; such as the reason why some may get sick after being vaccinated.

The other reason I shy away from flu shots, I’m a wuss when it comes to needles. I HATE them! I hated them even more the older I got and now when I have to have blood drawn my veins play peek-a-boo. So imagine me in the doctor’s office just wanting to get the blood work over and done with. But there is a nurse who ties that rubber band thingy on my arm extremely tight that I’m sure a vein is bound to appear. Nope! My veins are somewhere deep within doing the Nelson Muntz laugh. The worse experiences with needles occur when the nurse is just as frustrated as I am and just pokes, sticks, pokes, sticks and I’m on the verge of tears. It’s the worse if its on the hand (for IV injection).  That has happened. I think I told the person to stop and leave me alone.

I know flu shots have nothing to do with your veins. It’s just a straight jolt to your arm and you are done. Still….
