One of the most unique art exhibits is taking place right now in D.C. Launched last night at the Hamiltonian Gallery, Call and Response is an annual art show that features five writers that are paired with five artists. The writers write a short piece (prose or poetry) and their partnered artist creates a piece that responds to the writer. An added twist to this year’s exhibit is the additional response. Writers get the opportunity to see the artist’s piece before hand and respond to it with another original written piece.
The participating writers and artists are:
Amber Sparks (fiction) and YAY Team (video)
Michael Kimball (fiction) and Trevor Young (painting)
Danielle Evans (fiction) Lisa Marie Thalhammer (artist)
Kyle G. Dargan (poetry) and Mia Feuer (sculpture)
Reb Livingston (poetry) and Matthew Mann (painting)
This is the first I’ve heard of this show and I wish I would have known sooner. I would have definitely gone to last night’s opening. However, the exhibit runs until June 16th. For more information you can visit the Call and Response website and read up on the participants. You can also visit the Hamiltonian website for more information about Call and Response and other exhibits currently on display.
The Hamiltonian is located at 1353 U Street NW, Washington, D.C.

[…] May I suggest that Greenfield look up Sam Gilliam, a resident of DC since the 60s and one helluva an artist. If you travel through the Takoma Metro station, that’s Gilliam’s mural you are looking at. She may want to look into the D.C. Creative Writing Workshop, Dupont Underground, The Ward 7 Arts Collaborative and she may want to reference a post I did in June about a call and response art show. […]
