Writer’s Tool: Coffee?

Apparently coffee makes the world go ’round… or at least a bit more productive.  Partnered with CareerBuilder, one of America’s famous donut shops, Dunkin Donuts, conducted their annual survey on American coffee consumption trends in the work place.

As reported by Dunkin Donuts’ blog, 46 percent of all U.S. workers surveyed claim they are less productive without their cup of joe. The survey also revealed a few coffee consumption trends that includes; a finding that 61 percent drink two cups or more each work day, coffee consumption is the strongest in the Northeast region and that the burgeoning hipsters between the ages 18 and 24 believe that coffee has helped their careers by allowing them to network with their coffee drinking co-workers.

The survey also lists the top 15 professionals that are in a greater need to consume coffee. Topping the list are:

  • 1. Scientist/Lab Technician
  • 2. Marketing/Public Relations Professional
  • 3. Education Administrator
  • 4. Editor/Writer
  • 5. Healthcare Administrator

So, if you are the kind of writer that needs that boost from coffee, take comfort in the fact that you are not alone. However, I kind of chuckle at the cliché’ of a writer puffing away on a cigarette while typing their life away, with a steaming to lukewarm mug of coffee waiting on the side.

Despite the occasional hankering for a fancy coffee (read – frappuccino) I’ve never been that kind of writer, but I do need my boost every now and then. Thank God for chocolate!!!!! And no.. I’ve never had a Red Bull. I can’t decide if this is tragic or not as I’m told that while it actually doesn’t give you wings, the magic liquid does make you feel like you are “flying” faster than the speed of light. I could definitely use that boost when writing on deadlines.
